QShackExterior (49K)

When I first encountered my first version of when The Q Shack on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh opened up, I was in second heaven because of their absolutely stunning presentation of Texas-style beef brisket barbecue, second heaven because first heaven had open up a few weeks earlier in the form of Blue Moon Barbecue literally next door to it which also offered the very best Texas beef 'cue equal or superior to anything you'd ever find actually in Texas and I had traveled in Texas on business enough to know mouth-slobbering beef brisket when it hit my taste buds.

It was to my mis-delight when both places that opened up basically together also closed pretty close to the same time too and I was left without any place within the borders of North Carolina to carnivore Texas-style which, my preference for NC-Cue aside only because this is N.C. and there are more NC-BBQ places than other kinds, when done right can be every bit as equal to the best pork-based barbecue of any kind.

So it was to my pleasant delight that a couple of weeks ago I stumbled upon what claimed to be "The Original Q Shack" in Durham NC and in subsequent phone calls to the owner of it, Dan Ferguson, got the scoop on why his was the original and the others weren't and etcetera. Long story short, his was the original location, he took on some partners who each had their own locations such as at The Streets Of South Pointe shopping center (closed) and North Hills shopping center (I've not been to that one either because of the years-long renovations just finished) and as happens with partners, there were disagreements about this and that and the partnership split and Dan was left with his original location, thankfully for fine bovine barbecue fare afficiandos.

All the past aside, what Dan offers in the present is what you, the potential patron cares about: perfectly prepared and succulent beef brisket 'cue, served in massive portions with excellent sides in friendly environment by courteous employees. I suppose I could wax eloquent plastering this page with further words, but for once I'm going to politely be quiet and urge you to go try it and let the barbecue speak for itself more than my mere words, 'nuff said.

Well, not quite, since I do need to mention while my BBQ Page concentrates primarily on pork barbeque, I've never tried Dan's/The Original Q Shack's Eastern-NC pork 'cue and probably, no insult to Dan meant or implied, never will since I can get great traditional NC cue lots of local places but Texas-style beef bar-b-q this good is virtually impossible to find outside the borders of Texas itself, wolf it, enjoy it!
