Bogue House Restaurant's eastern North Carolina style barbecue is unusual.
The sauce is so tangy with vinegar that it almost assaults the tastebuds when you take that first bite. There is just the slightest hint of red pepper and a little salt, but what hits you is how tangy the sauce is. It's so strong that it borders on being sour-tasting especially after the first few bites.
The pork itself looks and tastes like it's been run through a shredder. Since it's soaked in sauce, it has very little actual texture. Being so thoroughly saturated in the sweet and soured sauce, you might as well try to eat it with a spoon as a fork. I couldn't taste any smoke flavor, either from wood or from a bottle. Seeking more information about this highly unusual barbecue, I asked to speak with the pitmaster who cooked it but was quickly told that they didn't make it, instead they bought from someone. They didn't say if this someone was a real person or a wholesale vendor. The don't offer many of the typical sides that most barbecue places do. They do offer hushpuppies which are a little oniony but are okay. The slaw is weak and watery and instead of greasy limp French fries I ordered the Tater Tots which were acceptable. Why do I choose to give Bogue House a two pig rating on Kent's scale of one to four? Because they're about the only game in town between Jacksonville and Bogue Banks. If you want to eat barbecue anywhere near Swansboro N.C., this is the only place I know of. And while barely good, it's okay, it isn't terrible. Just order when you're really hungry and you won't be too disappointed. |
