I have eaten at McCall's BBQ in Clayton N.C. McCall's BarBQue And Seafood Exterior SIgn_320 (44K) several times over the years. While okay, they never really impressed me as being that good.

Even though Smithfield Chicken & BBQ right near them is part of a small local chain of barbecue restaurants, I often will pick them over McCall's. Given the choice between the two of them and White Swan Barbecue near the Highway 301 and Interstate 95 interchange in nearby Smithfield N.C., I'll pick White Swan any day. But since I have friends who live in Clayton who like McCall's, I go there with them.

When McCall's was hit by a small plane several months back, thankfully no one in the restaurant was hurt though the pilot as killed, I was hoping they would do something different when they rebuilt it but they didn't. Like Bill's BBQ in Wilson and a handful of others, they serve everything buffet style McCall's BarBQue Buffet (47K) which is good when you want to eat a massive quantity but which means stuff is left out practically all day long and usually isn't fresh.

Their barbecue McCall's BarBQue BBQ Plate From The Buffet (46K) has always been very inconsistent even within the same ladle from the buffet. With a single ladle, one bite might be undercooked, the next overcooked and there is also a lot of gristle and fat present. To find a bite of what I consider to be acceptable barbecue, you have to pick through two or three big spoonfuls to find three or four decent bites. This inconsistency is why I choose to give them a barely deserved two on a scale of one to four rating.

Their fried chicken on the other hand is usually consistently pretty good. Every piece I've ever had was at least fresh and the breading was light but wasn't overcooked.

The one kudu I'll give them is their "red potatoes" or potatoes boiled in a light tomato base. They are truly superb, soft but not overcooked with a flavorful but not strong tomato sauce. Their yellow slaw is okay but suffers as everything else on the buffet does from being left out too long. The Brunswick Stew varies in quality from one visit to the next and is usually very watery. There aren't any other sides or desserts worth mentioning.
