You are so right about the sauce at Southern BBQ which is now called Smiley's. Steve and his lovely wife can sure cook some good BBQ also. When I was just a boy, my father and mother would close our grocery store at 11:00 PM and go to Southern for a late supper. That's been close to 50 yrs. ago. His Pits are old and seasoned. HE COOKS WITH WOOD........................ Smiley's also has a special every week. Last week it was a tray of BBQ with your drink for $4.99. Boy was that a good deal. Kent when I was a young man I asked my dad if I could have some money to buy me a car. Working for him at the Curb Market/Grocery Store, he paid me no salary. So in and around 1960 I went to work for Mr. Warren Stamey at Stamey's BBQ, in the Alley off Main St. here in Lexington. There is where I meet Wayne Monk and his brother Tommy of Lexington BBQ. Others that got there start with Mr. Stamey were, Joe Cope of Smokey Joe's BBQ.. The late Jimmy Harvey of Jimmy's BBQ. Henry ? of Henry James BBQ and many others that don't come to mind. Now don't get Stameys BBQ original in Greensboro Alley here in Lexington mixed up with Dan Stamey's BBQ in Tyro, N.C..Dan Stamey's Dad was the one that owned the original Smiley' on the Winston Rd. close to Speedy's. Mr. Stamey sold it, it became Souther BBQ. Then after years of being Southern BBQ, it was sold back to Mr. Stamey's son Dan who is part owner and they changed the name back to Smiley's. Boy is that a lot of information. The original Warren Stamey's here in Lexington is the same Stamey's in Greensboro, N.C.. Mr. Stamey had a gold mine here, his wife's named was Linda Bridges Stamey. They took their BBQ knowledge and gave it to Ms. Stameys kin folk in Shelby, N.C., that's how Bridges BBQ of Shelby, N.C. got started. Well I am getting tired, I think I will close for now.
